Windows 10 Update keeps overriding my monitor drivers to generic PnP and Non-Generic PnP drivers. I have two identical, new Lenovo monitors connected (one VGA the other Displayport/VGA) and try to install the Lenovo provided driver for Windows 10 but receive the message that the best driver is already installed. I can configure one to 1080p and the other is maxed at 1280x1024. Through trial and error I had gotten them both working at one point but after an upgrade this week, I've spent hours of trial and error uninstalling drivers, disconnecting and reconnecting to no avail. Why can't Widows 10 1) identify the monitors that are connected 2) recognize two monitors with the same result, 3) let me install the correct driver when I have it.

Just because the date stamp on the Windows generic drivers may be newer, it is of no value if it downgrades my monitors to non-functional. Hi, Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

Make sure all your Windows updates are up to date. Check with the manufacturer if the driver is available, if not run the old driver in compatibility mode and check if that helps. Hi all, I'm sure hoping there's a simple answer for this because it's got me baffled, along with my eyes feeling like they're being barraged every minute while I look at the screen. And I've been into computers and diagnostics and troubleshooting for a long time so that something like this is basic simple stuff. In the Display Properties of Control Panel, the 'Adapter' tab says 'Intel HD Graphics Family' and the 'Monitor' tab says 'Generic PnP Monitor,' and I have triple-checked that the laptop is set for using only its own display. And there is no external monitor connected to its VGA port. I've also updated the display/graphics driver to be the most recent, but it's made no change. I realize the graphics adapter is a separate entity hardware-wise from the display screen even though the monitor is attached by hinges, but I have just gotta' say that this is a new one on me that the screen of a laptop isn't recognized like it should be when the adapter is recognized perfectly. Quite frankly, I couldn't care less if the 'stated name' of the monitor doesn't look or read right, but I do care about the functionality that's supposed to go along with it being recognized correctly.

My need is adjusting the refresh rate to be higher than the joke 60 Mhz that it's limited to now 'cause my eyes can sure feel it and it's enough to call this laptop unuseable in its present state. The only refresh rate in the list is 60 & the 'other modes' is disabled. I've done some searching in the registy but so far I haven't searched for the right things (or in the right way, of 'whole string' or not) because I'm not finding where the refresh rate is stored or the list of modes and refresh rates that shows in that dropdown list when it's not greyed out. For some background of this laptop: my parents bought it in Dec. 2011 and I just got it today because they didn't need it anymore, and since they're not technologically adept about Windows settings and Control Panel things, to me it's understandable why it's been this way while they've had it.

The warranty it was under while they had it expired many months ago, so that's not an option, and unfortunately my finances are way too tight to purchase additional warranty time. Actually 60Hz and 'Generic PnP' are the standard. 60Hz is the standard for laptop screens, external monitors and a lot of TVs also.

Most laptops' internal displays are listed as 'Generic PnP' in Device Manager >Monitors. The external monitor will be 'Generic PnP' most of the time.

There are some rare exceptions when external monitors are listed as their brand and model. Since you're just dealing with the notebook's internal screen, you won't need to worry about that, though. I'd like to get a better idea of exactly what symptoms you're experiencing. Is it flickering? If so, does it flicker when you move the screen back and forth? Do you have any other major electronic devices near it that could cause interference?

Have you tried hooking up an external monitor, by chance? That would help determine if it is an internal display hardware issue or if it's a graphics chip issue. It was the most recent one that I caught, about your very short message asking if anything had changed.

Of the few laptops I've owned over the past few years, and one of them was a more advanced HP model than this 2000-350US and was given to me by a friend at work (but I don't remember which model, just that it came with Win7) this is the only laptop that has had such a low refresh rate that's optically painful to look. Two of the others were an IBM Thinkpad and Toshiba Portege.

Even a Packard Bell laptop I had in the 90's (yes, Packard Bell, a branch-off back then or merger or something from Zenith) with Windows For Workgroups 3.11 had a higher refresh rate and comfortable to look at for hours at a time. Of the laptops I've looked at that friends have and laptops that are used at work by supervisors, none have a refresh rate that make them painful to look. Since my beginning into computers back in the mid-80's, the feeling and reaction of my eyes and optic nerve is something I listen to and feel for as I am looking at a computer screen and is up there very close to the top of the deciding factors of whether or not I would choose myself to buy a particular laptop (or any computer monitor, although the higher 'safe' refresh rates have been standard on regular monitors just about forever anyway). My own personal opinion of 60 Hz is that it is optical poison and should never ever ever ever be even so little as considered by a laptop company or monitor company (nevermind regular TV's and similar things, that's a different aspect and different use of electronic screens, for instance because TV's aren't looked at 2-4 feet away like computer monitors are).

You're absolutely right about your later points. Unfortunately, the refresh rate is not easily changed. I believe, not only the video chip on the motherboard (in other words, the motherboard) would need to be changed, but also the LCD panel itself. Many low-end, mid-range and lower high-end notebooks will have a standard 60hz refresh rate. I would suggest if the refresh rate is of great importance, before buying a new laptop, look specifically at the higher-end gaming models that specify a higher refresh rate.
